Right at the end of May, former US President Donald Trump was convicted on all 34 counts of using public funds for personal ‘entertainment’ and attempting to hush it up.
Within hours of his conviction his fund-raising website for his Presidential campaign crashed under the weight of donors giving more to $30m to his cause as he holds himself up as a martyr for what he claims is unjust persecution brought about by his opponent for the presidency.
The judge is faced with a difficult decision now: jail Trump for breaking the law thirty-four times and being held in contempt of court on ten occasions, thus showing the American people that you cannot break the law, disrespect the legal system and get away with it – with the martyrdom consequences which could ensue from that, or does he let him off by giving a suspended sentence? A tough one indeed and we shall find out on July 11th. If Trump does get a 6 month jail term (plus fine), mass rioting would disturb the markets but fundamentally it wouldn’t upset the earnings of Apple or Nvidia etc.
