It is oft quoted that January is a good indicator of the way the rest of the year will go for stock investors. Let’s hope so. Since 1950, when January has been positive for US stocks, 86% of the time the rest of the year has seen a positive return with an average gain of 12%. Even more optimistically, historically whenever the year before is down and January is up 5% (last month the S&P500 was up 6.18%), the rest of the year is then up nearly 28%, the last evidence of which was 2018/19.
